The number of people receiving benefits in Invercargill City has decreased in the latest benefit figures, local MP Sarah Dowie says.
There were 4,077 people on a benefit in Invercargill City at the end of June 2015, a drop of 186 or over 4 per cent compared to a year ago.

Callum Findlater has been named my Youth MP for 2016 representing Invercargill electorate.

Callum, 17, lives in Ryal Bush and attends Central Southland College.  He has a keen interest in politics, debate and the history of our democracy. He would like to commit his life to the service of others through politics.

Four students have been selected to advance to the final stage to become my Youth Member of Parliament for 2016 representing Invercargill.

The finalists are Blair Duthie, of Verdon College, Caitlin Boyle, of Southland Girls’ High School, Callum Findlater, of Central Southland College and Keiren Perkins, of Verdon College.

I am thrilled the Waihopai Health Services medical centre has signed up to free doctor visits for children under six.

This scheme is an important preventative health measure, as it means parents will be more likely to take their child to the doctor for treatment before their condition becomes worse.

I’m pleased to be able to congratulate Southland district commander Inspector Lane Todd and his staff for the reduction in overall crime in the region in the 2013/14 year.

Southland’s latest annual crime statistics show recorded crime has dropped five per cent in the past fiscal year.
